Singer/songwriter and teacher Laura Brereton has been teaching kids of all ages for over 15 years. From working at a school for dyslexic kids to teaching music and art at an after school program to running a rock music camp, Laura has done it all! In September 2005, she started the Medford Music Studio and since then she has taught guitar, singing, piano and songwriting to dozens of students.
Laura began singing at an early age in both her church and school choirs. While at Hamilton College, Laura sang in an a cappella group as well as a rock band that played original and cover songs. After graduating from Hamilton, Laura worked as a history teacher and language arts tutor at a private school for dyslexic students. Shortly after graduating from college, Laura attended the National Guitar Workshop in New Milford, CT where she studied guitar and songwriting. This experience took her life in a new direction, prompting her to move to Boston to focus more on a music career. She continued her music education at the New England Conservatory with a focus on music theory, ear training, and vocal technique. She has also studied voice and guitar with some of New England’s finest teachers including Leslie Holmes, Rick Harris, John Curtis, Susan Mazer and Anita Suhanin.
In 2011, Laura started the Kids Open Mic which gives musicians ages 12-18 an opportunity to perform. She hosts several open mics throughout the year, showcasing young talent in the Boston area. Additionally, Laura is the Program Director for Circle the Square, a street festival in Medford that occurs on the 3rd Thursday of each month from June through September and the Music Coordinator for the Mystic River Celebration, an outdoor festival at the Condon Shell along the Mystic River in Medford. Laura is also an active performer, regularly playing in coffeehouses, bars and clubs throughout the Boston area.
Laura’s other interests include writing, yoga, reading, swimming, hiking, gardening, cooking and film. Her favorite city (other than Boston, of course!) is Paris, her favorite color is green, and her favorite film (at the time of this writing) is the 2005 production of Pride and Prejudice. Laura also has two children who keep her life busy and exciting!
